Hansel Center (University of Notre Dame Center for Arts & Culture)

The Hansel Center, a symbol of South Bend’s West Side community that once served as the Children’s Dispensary and housed Head Start offices, is undergoing physical transformation into the University of Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture. The historic structure, located at 1045 W. Washington St., in South Bend’s westside historic district will undergo an adaptive reuse through a partnership involving the University of Notre Dame, South Bend Heritage Foundation and the City of South Bend.

The Center will house renowned fine-art print studio, Segura Publishing relocating from Tempe, Ariz. In addition one of Notre Dame’s literary programs, Letras Latinas, also will find much-needed permanent space for its writer-in-residence initiative, and the Center also will provide space for gatherings of minority writers, publishers and editors from around the country with significant opportunities for community interaction.

Historic Rushton Apartments

This fall construction will start on Historic Rushton Apartments. Facing demolition since 2002, Historic Rushton found new life when SBHF was awarded Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for the renovation of Historic Rushton by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). Additional funding was provided by the St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission for a total project cost of approximately $3.3 million. When complete, Historic Rushton will have 23 apartments available for rent to Seniors.
